Starlets Awarded Club of the Year Again
2 March 2019
Our run of awards success continued at the Comet Sports Awards last night, an event that recognises sporting excellence across Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock. After picking up the trophy last year we were incredibly proud to find ourselves on the shortlist for ‘Club of the Year’ once again.
Not that we’ve been resting on our laurels of course, with Starlets having grown even more rapidly in our second year than in our first. At the time of last year’s event we had been around for just 9 months but already had three teams. Fast forward to today and we have 9 teams, with 100 girls playing regularly as part of the club.
And sure enough it was our commitment to creating a positive environment and our track record in getting ever more girls playing football that impressed the judges, with Starlets holding off strong competition to be named Club of the Year for the second time running.
Speaking at the event, Starlets Vice Chairman Stuart Mugford said “The amazing journey that is Stevenage Starlets FC continues. Last year was special because we’d started something new and seen how positively it had been received. In a way this is even better because it shows how we’ve been able to build on that and push on from there”.
Starlets Child Welfare Officer Liz Manning added “We’re incredibly proud to have won this award again and it’s fitting that we have so many of our girls with us here to collect it. Everything we do is aimed at giving them the best possible experience and it’s right that they should be front and centre in celebrating our success”.
We know there are so many fantastic sports clubs in our local area doing great things, so it means a lot to all involved with Starlets to be recognised in this way. It was especially pleasing to see another girls only football club, Hitchin Belles, also making the shortlist, showing this region is leading the way in promoting participation female sport.
As ever we must dedicate this award all those who have helped us, without whom none of this would be possible. From sponsors and supporters, volunteers and coaches, through to parents and players we are lucky to have an amazing group of people who are committed to ensuring as many girls as possible can enjoy playing football.
Thank you for all you do in helping us make dreams come true.
